Prevention of fatigue in industrial work environments

Validation of platform-generated fatigue correlates in industrial work environments

Evaluation of workplace design in context of fatigue-prevention

In the context of growing skill shortages, maintaining the health of the workforce is becoming increasingly important. Besides physical illnesses, mental health disorders, in particular, contribute to a rising number of absence days. To counter this, our project aims to address the following key aspects: the objective measurement and evaluation of cognitive fatigue in the workplace, the impact of assistive technologies, and the translation of clinical study findings into the industrial working environment. The study focuses on two distinct groups: healthy individuals and those experiencing chronic fatigue, including conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Long-Covid, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The ultimate goal is to provide recommendations for optimizing work design, especially through digital assistant systems, preserving work capacity for individuals with fatigue-related impairments, and facilitating successful reintegration after illness.

What we want to achieve

Our Project Goals

Validation in industrial work environment

The fundamental biomarkers for fatigue detection were found in clinical studies under laboratory conditions. The first goal is to validate their transferability in industrial work environments.

Evaluate the potential of the workplace design

The mental impact of e.g. digital assistance systems is typically evaluated through subjective questionnaires. To overcome this there is a potential of using such objective biomarkers for a safer prevention of fatigue.

Optimise work design

It would be possible to give some general recommendations for an optimal design of the work environment, including the preservation of work capacity for individuals with fatigue-related impairments, and facilitating successful reintegration after illness.
