A HEALTHY MIND IN EVERY BODY
Cognitive vitality is the best possible usability of higher brain functions. Disturbed by a number of non-neurological stress factors, these can be impaired. Funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, scientists from the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and non-universitary institutions are researching to decipher the anatomical and systemic basis of these disorders with the aim of avoiding limitations in people's everyday lives.

WHERE DO WE STAND WITH COGNITIVE VITALITY?
Medicine, neuroscience, computer science and engineering are focal points of Saxony-Anhalt's research institutions. This is an excellent prerequisite for opening up a new, complex research area with innovative methods such as cognitive vitality.
Impairments of cognitive vitality have profound effects on a person's independence and self-realisation. Fortunately, however, these dysfunctions are likely to be reversible and, because they are predictable, they can be influenced. We expect that within approximately seven years, our research cluster will identify first interventive and preventive measures that can be integrated into everyday life and primary care. Eventually, our discoveries will lead to new therapies and products that counteract impairments of higher cognitive performance, especially memory, spatial orientation, attention and decision-making.

Building on a core nexus of mechanistic circuit, vulnerability, and reserve research, we aim to decipher mechanisms for brain protection against common aetiologies, brain recovery after adverse events, toxic waste accumulation and exhaustion, and neural resource mobilization.
